These 2 Things Are More Important Than Your Success

Driven to hit goals, most people sacrifice a lot to go for success.

Adamant to the idea that one day all their hard work will pay off, they work long hours and hustle on the weekends so that someday they’ll be able to share a fruitful life with their with family, look after their health, and do all the things they never had time to do.

But as Gary Keller has penned:

“Time waits for no one… When you gamble with your time, you may be placing a bet you can’t cover. Even if you’re sure you can win, be careful that you can live with what you lose.”

I know achieving success and being at the top of the ranks is important to you. I know we all want to live extraordinary lives, but it’s not worth sacrificing everything for.

These two things are more important than your success:

1. Your Health

“Health is like money, we never have a true idea of its value until we lose it.” -Josh Billings

You may or may not agree with this, but your drive for success is killing you.

You’ve got one life and one body. I mean it can only take so much.

To stay up late, eat poorly, and disregard exercise. That’s taking a risk at your future.

There’s two inevitable outcomes to that behavior, and they’re both not looking good; you either slowly burn out or you get wiped out too soon.

It’s not worth it. And it’s not just terrible for your health, it’s subsequently bad for your work. To produce your best work you need your best energy, and you can’t have that if you’re not looking after your health.

Put your health first.

To achieve what you want to achieve in life, your health should be your highest priority.

The solution?

I’ve got a real idea for 4 things that can help maximize both your success and health:

1. Utilize Your Morning Hours

“If you don’t prioritize and maximize your morning hours, you’ll always be left wondering what your life could have been.” — Benjamin P. Hardy

I really think everyone should be jumping out of bed to immediately begin their day with their most important work.

Your highest priority demands your highest levels of energy.

If you leave it until the evening, you’ll be exhausted, you won’t be bringing your best self, and you won’t produce your best work. Simple.

Plus it will be done. If you spend your early hours tackling the most important work, you’ll be pumped and float through the rest of the day with little effort.

“Structuring the early hours of each day is the simplest way to extraordinary results.” -Gary Keller

2. Get the Right Nourishment

“Garbage in garbage out” -George Fuechsel

You wouldn’t put rubbish fuel into a Ferrari. Treat your body in the same way.

Develop an easy and effective nutritious meal plan designed to fuel your best work.

It’s crucial. You can’t live an extraordinary life without having the right nutrients to get you there.

3. Exercise

“Those who think they have no time for exercise will sooner or later have to find time for illness.” -Edward Stanley

No one’s asking you to become a bodybuilder here, but just get your body moving in someway. It could be a short a jog, a 30 minute walk or simply doing 10,000 steps a day.

Whatever is, just do it! There’s too many benefits to not:

Boosted happiness levels
Improved memory
Increased self-confidence
Boosted energy levels
Improved sleep quality
Live longer

4. Get enough sleep

“Some people say they’ll sleep when they’re dead. But if you aren’t getting enough sleep, you’re half dead already.” — Dan Pedersen

You need eight hours of sleep. Period.

To achieve extraordinary results you need to show up day after day. And you can’t continually do that on poor sleep.

Look after your sleep. Protect it. Get fueled up and come back the next day ready to crush it!

2. Your Family

“Do you really think you can ever get back a child’s bedtime story or birthday? Is a party for a five-year-old with imaginary pals the same as dinner with a teenager with high-school friends? Is an adult attending a young child’s soccer game on par with attending a soccer game with an adult child?” -Gary Keller

We can all get too caught up in our own drive for success that we forget how important our family relationships are. But you’ve got to step back from that.

The other day I found myself almost saying no to a request from my mother because I wanted to write.

To say “No, I’ve got to write” to the very women that gave me the opportunity to write would be absurd.

Sure you can’t say yes to every request. But most requests aren’t urgent, if it’s a responsible request then work out a time that fits your schedule so you still have time for your work and the family commitments.

It’s not just that. But you’ve also got to remember that for the most part your family will be there for you when no one else.

When you’re on death bed, your work isn’t going to be there at your side. It will be your family and loved ones.

Don’t say you’re doing it for your family and that they’ll understand later. Show them everyday, kiss, hug, talk, and laugh with them, show how much you care for them.

Your family’s more important than your success.

In Conclusion

“Business and awards don’t mean that much. There is nothing more important than the health of you and your loved ones. Life is certainly too short not to appreciate people who have been significant in it.” -Richard Branson

There’s more to life than just achieving success.

No matter how successful you are, you want to be well enough to enjoy the fruits of it. And you want your family there with you, even if no one else is.

So give those things time, make it deliberate that each day you give attention to your health and family.

Maybe taking this approach we’ll never achieve such accomplishments as those who are committed to the hustle at the expense of their own health and family relationships. But I think in the grand scheme of things we’ll live better lives.
