Want to write for us?

This is the Post-Grad Survival Guide 3.0. We got a new logo. We changed colors from orange to blue. And we’re here to publish YOU.

That was lame. You get what we’re saying, though.

Before I get into the new changes (there’s a lot of them), I wanted to talk about our new writing guidelines..

Our Writing Guidelines

  • We accept draft posts only.
  • Include a strong feature image (preferably from Unsplash).
  • Keep grammatical mistakes to a minimum. If there are too many, we will reject the piece.
  • Articles must relate to being a post-grad. They could focus on work, freelancing, relationships, life lessons, finances and travel. We LOVE posts that have personal stories, and unique lessons. We love to see personality come through the story. We want to be inspired. We want to show post-grads that theyʼre not alone in their struggles.
  • Include a clearly defined headline that doesn’t withhold too much information to get clicks. For instance, if writing about the benefits of a Roth IRA, don’t make the headline: “This One Investing Mistake Is Costing You Thousands Of Dollars.” A better headline is “Why Most College Grads Should Open Up A Roth IRA.” With the second headline, we know more about what we’re getting from the piece. Also, don’t be too vague. Titles like “My Mom” or “Sunday Morning Musings” are not clearly defined headlines either.
  • What we typically DON’T look for: Posts that are too broad, general, and don’t directly tie into the post-grad theme. I.E. “9 Ways To Boost Your Happiness.” A better post: “You Can Boost Happiness After College By Cooking Every Day.
  • Use Medium’s formatting features to insert subtitles, pull quotes, dividers, links, and bold/italics for added flair. We don’t want to open up a draft and see long walls of text with no added formatting.

To become a writer, send in your medium USERNAME to us right here. Make sure to include the “@” in front of it. For instance, mine is “@tomkuegler

Our Biggest Changes To The Post-Grad Survival Guide

We’ve changed a lot. Here’s a list of changes we made..

  • We cleared up the NAVIGATION bar up top. For now, all you’ll see is a “Write For Us” tab and a “Coaching Corner” tab (more on that later).
  • New logo + color.
  • More focus on post-grad issues/stories.
  • More focus on quality submissions. No more publishing every story that is submitted to us.
  • Upcoming “Feature Month” series where we have a call for submissions every single month.

What The Heck Is A “Coaching Corner,” Stephen and Tom?

Basically this page is for featuring stories meant to “coach” YOU. The readers. Recent grads. We have a few submissions coming in from some of Medium’s heaviest hitters.

Career advice is coming. Relationship advice is coming. Interview tips. Lessons in entrepreneurship. Productivity hacks.

We want to help. We want to publish some of the best posts on this platform right here. We want you to sit at your computer and refresh this page three times per day waiting for the next slice of Medium goodness to come.

Okay, maybe we don’t want that. But you know what we mean.

Our first coaching corner post comes from Niklas Göke. This dude was popular on Medium before I typed my first word here back in late 2016.

Here it is: “Graduating From Overriding My Gut

Thanks so much Nik!

“Medium’s Millennial Career and Life Advice Publication”

My co-editor/partner in crime Stephen Moore wrote that up. ⬆️

We’re about to throw this publication back to how it used to be in the old days. We used to feature a lot of career advice. We used to get recruiters and guidance counselors to publish their tips here.

We’re going to start doing that again.

Whether you want to be an entrepreneur or climb the corporate ladder, we got something for you right here. Maybe you’re happy with your job and want to start a side-hustle. We got you covered, too.

This is only the beginning of many changes coming.

Stay tuned.
