There are many factors to consider when finding a job besides pay. The last thing you would want is to go through the trouble of finding a job only to realize its one that you want to leave. It’s important that you take the time to figure out the type of job you’re looking for and evaluate whether or not it will be a good fit.

Growth Opportunities

A good job has many opportunities and room for you to grow. It’s important to consider how a job will help you grow in your career and what you’d be able to learn from the job that can benefit your career in the long run. Try to find out how you will be trained, and if the environment of the job is supportive of advancement. Does the company have tuition reimbursement programs for external learning? Are there opportunities to go to conferences or training programs? Does the company work to promote their employees? These are some questions you should think about when looking for your next job.

Culture

It is important to consider the culture of the company before accepting an offer. When you’ll be spending a good chunk of time working, it’s important that you are part of a supportive culture. Try to learn about what the values of the company are, and how they treat their employees. Figure out what their leadership is like, and company turnover looks like. A high-turnover can be an indication that there may be something off with the culture of the company. Try reading Glassdoor and Indeed reviews that other employees have left about working there to gain some insight about what it would be like to actually work there.

Who You’ll Be Working With

Who you work plays a significant impact on job satisfaction. It’s important to evaluate who you’ll be working with and what the team is like. Hopefully you will have a chance to actually meet them and ask questions to better understand team dynamics. Try to find out how the team collaborates. Do they have weekly meetings or do people mostly work on their own?

Passion and Values

It’s important to ask yourself if you’re passionate about the mission and the values of the company. It’s also important to consider if the role is something you’d enjoy doing. If your values don’t align with the company, or you don’t enjoy the work you do, you’re likely to not last very long at the company.

Remember to look beyond salary when looking for your next job. There are many factors that can impact your satisfaction at the job. Do your research and ask questions that would allow you to figure out if your next job is one you’ll enjoy.
