How can we better recognize sexual harassment so we can better avoid and deal with it?
Sexual harassment sucks. It sucks to be on the receiving end, it sucks to be called out for obliviously perpetrating it, and it sucks to watch your friends go through the messy aftermath of sexual harassment on either side.
We wish we lived in a world where people didn’t abuse their positions of power for their sexual gain; a world where nobody delivered unwanted advances to people merely trying to go about their lives and get some work done. We’ve come a long way from the days where a boss blatantly slapping the ass of his Girl Friday in the office was A-ok, but sexual harassment is still insidiously ruining lives, reformatting careers, and helping maintain a status quo that desperately needs to change if we are to progress as a functional society. Nothing will change if we pretend we live in that dream world already, when in reality we have a long way to go.
Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to forget about the very real, very tragic effects of the myriad manifestations of sexual harassment because, most of the time, the recipients remain silent. That’s why we, the purveyors of LadyBits on Medium, have created a place on the web to discuss this psychological manipulation tactic that ruins so much and is acknowledged so little.
Welcome to The Power of Harassment, an open collection on Medium curated by LadyBits.
How this works
Anyone with a Medium account can publish an essay to the Power of Harassment collection and share it anywhere on the Web.
The best essays will be cross-posted into the LadyBits collection, where our team will offer our editorial guidance and copyediting services to make sure they are in the best possible condition, and circulate them via our social media channels.
Our Goals
The purpose of this exercise is to provide a platform and support network for individuals interested in engaging in productive discourse about sexual harassment and to share related stories and personal experiences.
Our hope is that by providing people with a better understanding of the nuances surrounding this issue, we will all be better equipped to avoid sexual harassment in the future. And at the very least, we hope that those of us who have had the unfortunate experience of enduring sexual harassment (it’s a lot of us) will find some peace in knowing that they are not alone.
Guidelines
This is not a witch hunt or roast. Use good judgment about using names and descriptions that could be personally identifying.
Any posts containing slanderous, threatening, defamatory language will be reported.
