Postcards to the Underworld Princess
In Homage to Arch Hades
I. Oxford
I did as you said – I think we all did:
We stuck to the list and patiently read
all those smart books in the right
order, the right frame of mind,
omitted the chapters that you didn’t find
important, inspiring or would
not consider clever or good
for those of us in delicate moods.
II. Porto Cervo
I did as you said – I’m sure we all did:
We watched the bluest horizons
for false prophets to surprise us,
and they did, except they slid
in through the backdoor
with believable ease across the dance floor
of lovers, liars, heroes, messiahs…
III. Ko Pha-ngan
..we all blurred into one beautiful crowd
of glitter-ball glamour, singing aloud
that all we cared about was the next post,
looking amazing, forgetting our ghosts..
so whatever you sold us in iambic lines
on 21c philosophy or consumerist crimes
got lost in the thrust to have a good time.
IV. Alice
We did as you said – I know we all did
because on the way home to homes
now sold, rooms and hopes grown out of,
we all looked similarly let down and alone:
a hangover that lasts for months or years,
although we never drunk away our fears.
But now we understand your name.
