The Power of Poetry

Ten Million Reasons

I can’t help but wonder how many people will read this poem. That’s why I wrote it. If you’re reading this, know that it is my hope that maybe one person will take a piece of meaning and message away from my words as they are read aloud by someone else on their journey through the dark days of winter.

All at once, a million flashed and swirled into my sight.
Then I saw two more, ten million more.
Came on so fast they shook my whole world with their glow.
Standing still and holding each other tight, the million bulbs came alive in all the trees that surrounded me.
ten million fireflies, shining bright, from every twig and tree.

Boy with a watch is both a boy and not a watch. What does he think? What does he do? How can hours pass when he merely ticks his wrist? I’m sorry to tell that despite it feels like an eternity, time flies like an arrow, but I guess the price we pay for living in slow-mo is one more second without knowing anything. Even though he’s wearing a watch, he’s not keeping time. He may be watching TV, eating, chatting to me, or penning a poem. If only I could read his mind all day long.
