We’re Not Really Strangers

I knew you once,
And even if I never get the chance to know you again,
I will never forget that

It’s been you since the first day we met.
Five years ago my life started over.
I relearned how to trust,
How to look past the monsters and just see the love.
I learned that goodbye doesn’t always mean that it’s over;
That good things can indeed come back.
The people we are supposed to have will always return.
And if they don’t,
They were never meant to stay in the first place.

It’s been you since the first time you smiled at me,
And the last time you said goodbye.
I’m sure you know.
It’s been you in these words,
These punctuation marks.
The blank spaces at the end of each page
Where I tell you I’m sorry
And how I wish I could go back to the last time
I was happy.

It was you.
