Dear Friend, Swing for the Fences

Dear friend,

You may have heard of everyday sayings like “it came out of left field,” “step up to the plate,” or “a ballpark figure.” All of those came from baseball. I love baseball because it mirrors life. Life doesn’t happen just on Sundays or every couple of days. It happens every day. You will have good days and you will have bad days.

Some days you will feel like the Chicago Cubs. Sometimes it will feel like The Universe is conspiring against you, that you are the unluckiest person on the planet. It will feel like a century has passed since the last good thing happened to you. You will know what it’s like to have your dreams within reach, only to have it tipped away from your grasp at the last second. You will know the ache of defeat. But also know this. One day, your day will come. And it will bring the sweetest tears to your face.

Other days you will feel like Jackie Robinson. The world can be a cruel place, and it will try to break you for no reason other than the fact that you’re being yourself. You will be overlooked. You will be dismissed. When they see you pursuing your dream, they will mock you and try to hold you down…
