Dutch Desperation: A Total Disconnect between Pride and Reality

I keep visiting the Netherlands. It is one of my most favorite countries. I have many friends who are native Dutch. One of the many things that the Netherlands excels at is sport. It goes without saying that football is the most popular. In fact, I used to be a member of a related fan club. It had members from all over the world, including those who support Dutch football and keep rooting for the national team, as well as the top clubs like Ajax and Feyenoord.

That being said, I have since ceased to be an active member of that club. The reason is pretty simple: if you can put things into perspective, that is. Dutch football fans are a passionate lot. They want their team to play good football, always cheer for them, and stand by their team in the worst of times. There is nothing wrong with that. Most fans are like that. Aren’t they?

What makes the Dutch fans different, though, is the fact that they shun pragmatism when it comes to their football. They do not quite like an honest assessment of their national team…
