Every sport is incomplete without championships or world tournaments. Like other sports, cricket also has world championships. Cricket has three world championships for three formats of cricket. But in this write-up, we will be learning about the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup (WC).

Be with me till the end as I tell you all you need to know about the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. This will be your guide to understanding the T20 WC.

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup

The Men’s T20 World Cup is a Twenty20 International cricket tournament conducted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) since 2007. The tournament is held every two years. In the history of the tournament, only the West Indies and England have won the title more than one time.

All the hosts of the T20 WC since the 1st edition are as follows: South Africa hosted the first edition in 2007, England in 2009, West Indies in 2010, Sri Lanka in 2012, Bangladesh in 2014, India in 2016, UAE and Oman in 2021, Australia in 2022, and the 2024 edition is hosted by the US and West Indies.

The Twenty20 Format of Cricket

Unlike football, cricket is played in three formats. The three formats of cricket last from half a day (T2O), to a whole day (ODI), to five days (Tests). The T20 format of cricket is the shortest form of cricket. You can read more about cricket in the article written by me and published in The Press Box.

The International Cricket Council

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is the controlling body of cricket around the world. The ICC is what FIFA is to world football. The ICC conducts the world championships of cricket such as the ODI World Cup, T20 World Cup, Champions Trophy, and the World Test Championship.

The ODI WC, the Champions Trophy, and the World Test Championship are held after four years. Whereas, the T20 WC is conducted every two years. England won the last edition of the T20 WC held in Australia in 2022 by beating Pakistan by 5 wickets. This was England’s second T20 WC title.

The Men’s T20 World Cup 2024

This time, the T20 WC is being held in the USA and the West Indies. This year’s T20 WC is historic in so many ways. For the first time in history, cricket is being played in the USA at an International level. It's also the first time the US has hosted an International cricket match and a tournament.

The 2024 T20 WC has the most number of teams, 20 in a single edition. The last T20 WC in 2022 witnessed the participation of 16 teams in total. This time, 20 teams are divided into four groups of five each for the group stage. These teams and groups are as follows:

Group A: India, USA, Canada, Ireland, and Pakistan
Group B: Australia, Namibia, England, Scotland, and Oman
Group C: Afghanistan, West Indies, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, and New Zealand.
Group D: South Africa, Netherlands, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh

This year’s format is different from the previous two editions of the T20 WC. In the group stage, each team will clash with each other only once. The tournament started on June 2 and will last until June 29. A total of 55 matches will be played in the tournament across the US and West Indies.

Qualification Senerio For Playoffs

Each team will get 2 points for a win and a single point in the event of no result. The top two teams from four groups will advance to the next stage of the tournament. The Super 8 stage will have two groups of four teams each. For Super 8, the first two teams from each group will qualify. For the semifinals, the top two teams from each group of the Super 8 will qualify.
