The Los Angeles hired J.J. Reddick as their new head coach this past week. Reddick’s claim to fame is he and LeBron James have been doing a podcast for a few months called “Mind the Game.” They have good chemistry; it was enjoyable. It’s over. He’s James’ coach now, that is, if James stays in Los Angeles. He does not have to stay.

When Reddick was hired as coach this past week, it ended weeks of speculation that wasn’t really speculation.

It also brought up an issue that hangs over America like an awning over a house: white privilege. How did this happen? An unqualified ex-basketball player just got the most lucrative job in professional basketball. He’s the Lakers coach now.

I can’t help but to ask — did he jump the line because he is a White guy?

This is so because:

  • Reddick has never coached before anywhere;
  • Reddick has been an announcer on ESPN but for a year;
  • Multiple African American NBA assistant coaches (some ex-head coaches) did not get a sniff from the Lakers;
  • Many White coaches, with experience, also got no love from the Lakers;
