A few days ago, I attended a WNBA game between the Washington Mystics and the Dallas Wings. I used to go to WNBA games a lot but then Covid-19 hit and everything slowed down. It was good to get back to a game.

It also was cool because it was Pride Month and the Mystics do a great job of celebrating the LGBTQ community and the many “Queer” lady ballers in the WNBA living and performing openly or not.

The Mystics played well and won the game and on the way home I listened to a podcast about the history of the WNBA and Pride. It is something every fan of the WNBA and sports should do: educate yourself on how the history of “Queer” women playing in the league is similar to that of African Americans in the NBA.

I am not speaking of influence or domination of the play on the court. However, so many of the best players in the WNBA are and have been “Queer,” it is impossible to ignore. This is why the league’s promotion of Pride Month this year struck a chord with me. I had been away from going to the games and going back to the games reminded me of the movement on this issue in society and in some sports leagues.
