Stanton, Judge Drive in 10 in 15–7 Wallop of White Sox
Stanton homers twice, drives in six in a 3/4 effort
Yesterday was Gleyber Torres’ day, today is Giancarlo Stanton’s as the New York Yankees defeat the Chicago White Sox 15–7 Thursday night.
He drilled two home runs in his first two at-bats off White Sox starter Dylan Cease.
Stanton worked the count in his favor to 3–1 before lining his first homer of the game off a Cease fastball.
His second homer was a 1–0 fastball right down the middle hit over the wall in right.
He capped off a career-high six RBI night with a bullet single on an 0–2 changeup off reliever Tanner Banks.
“It feels good,” Stanton said following his offensive explosion.
“But after the first two (home runs) we were tied again so I was like ‘I gotta do more I gotta do more.’”
Game summary
The Yankees jumped ahead 2–0 on Stanton’s eighth home run of the season.
After a 1–2–3 first inning, Luis Gil ran into trouble. AJ Pollock hit an RBI double and Leury García drove in two with a single to right field to give Chicago a 3–2 lead.
Chicago’s lead didn’t last long.
Rizzo lined an RBI triple down the right field line scoring Aaron Judge.
Stanton’s next at-bat was similar to his first. An opposite-field two-run home run put New York up 5–3.
DJ LeMahieu joined the party in the fourth with an RBI double to score Kyle Higashioka from first base.
The White Sox loaded the bases in the bottom half with one out. Pollock was able to score on a wild pitch, but a groundout and strikeout got New York out of the jam and preserved a 6–4 lead.
Gil was pulled after four innings. He threw 83 pitches, giving up four runs on five hits, walking two, and striking out five.
Miguel Castro replaced Gil and threw a perfect fifth.
Lucas Luetge pitched a scoreless frame in the sixth.
Aaron Judge hit his MLB-leading 11th home run 456 feet away into the left-field seats to make it 7–4.
Luetge gave up a base hit to start the seventh and was replaced by Jonathan Loáisiga.
Loáisiga walked Tim Anderson and gave up a game-tying three-run home run to Yoán Moncada.
New York blew the game wide open in the eighth, all with two outs.
An infield single that Judge beat out scored two. Stanton added two more RBI on a bullet single.
Josh Donaldson topped the inning off with a three-run shot to make it 14–7, doubling their lead.
Judge drove in another RBI on a sac fly making it a 15–7 game in the ninth.
Chad Green closed out the game with two scoreless innings.
Offensive notes
The Yankees were up early, got down just as quick, but battled back for what seems like the tenth time this year.
The offense has no quit. They remain undefeated (14–0) when scoring five or more runs in a game.
Stanton drove in six of the Yankee runs a day after Torres drove in five.
It’s so much fun watching this team play. Their resiliency, clutch genes, and explosion get me excited about the playoffs, even just 31 games into the season.
They may not have a top-bottom dominant lineup, but it doesn’t matter who’s hitting at one or nine in the lineup; they are getting the job done.
Easily the best offensive performance of the season tonight. From the walks to the home runs. They were all timely and helped the Yankees win their 23rd game this season.
It was the most runs scored since September 2020 when the Yankees scored 20 against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Pitching notes
Tonight wasn’t the best night for pitchers, specifically Gil and Loáisiga.
Gil’s command on his slider was rough and he had trouble putting hitters away. He got two strikes on multiple hitters but hung his slider that was knocked around for run-scoring hits.
With that said, he fought his way to pitch four innings and kept the Yankees in the game, which every starter has done this year.
Loáisiga has had a down year compared to last.
He gave up three home runs facing 150-plus hitters last year. In just 55 batters faced this year, he has already matched that total.
His command hasn’t been there including tonight.
He couldn’t locate the fastball low which allowed Moncada to tie the game.
But as Aaron Boone said in his postgame interview, the Yankees need to find different ways to win, and tonight was certainly different.
The offense carried the pitching staff tonight.
Looking ahead
Game two of this four-game series will have Yankee ace Gerrit Cole (2–0, 2.67 ERA) square off against Vince Velasquez (2–2, 3.97 ERA).
New York will look to win their fifth consecutive game.
Let’s go Yankees!
