I don’t currently belong to any specific writing community… I used to belong to a couple of them, however I can’t go into TOO much detail about them — they involve a certain theme that I’m fond of but don’t want to share just yet. What I can say is that these communities were online, and held contests every now and then that members could participate in. I actually did participate in a couple of these contests, however I never really placed higher than 2nd or 3rd from what I can recall… it’s been a few years.
My ideal community… it’d be one that would be open to multiple types of writing, and multiple different themes. Or, alternatively, it would be focused on some specific themes that writers could work on there — whether openly or anonymously. Online community would also be a plus, as it would be more easily accessible and would allow for a wider audience.
To foster a better writing community here in Tuscaloosa… honestly, it doesn’t feel like there IS one right now. Admittedly, I haven’t really been LOOKING due to…reasons… but nevertheless I feel like that the first step to fostering a better writing community here in T-Town would be to start one.
Once one’s started… I’d say a culture of acceptance would need to be grown. People can write about a wide variety of things, and even if someone doesn’t want to help with it they should be able to at least accept the work for what it is.
