The 5 What

What is the most valuable thing you carry with you from the beginning of your journey as a product person?

That there is, and never will be, a good product without good people, leadership and management behind it.

What do you identify as a common thing among people working on product development?

They are people with a lot of energy, who are thirsty to make things happen, but who also need to see through other’s eyes to have a clear vision of what the other expects. This is empathy. They are not people who are happy with the first answer, and they search for the root reason incessantly, because they know that there lives the problem to be solved.

What do you think will be the next big trend in product development?

More and more hybrid and adaptable models and ways of working. I don’t believe that applying the same operating mode to everything and everyone will work in the long run. There are completely different people and cultures arising all the time, that require adaptation. There are companies that have found their unique way of working and have reached unimaginable levels, like Spotify for example. I believe there will be new ways of doing what we do today.

What have you learned recently?

To better communicate. It has never been so challenging to pass on to others and understand the feelings in words. Writing, videos, images, sounds, gifs, etc. is nothing new to us, but it’s being used in a new way, with the objective not only to entertain or inform. I’ve been using these resources to express myself, and this has been a great lesson.

What would you like to say to the product people who are reading this text?

We will never know everything, but if we seek to be more and more human and empathetic, we will achieve great goals. In my vision, our work is 80% Soft Skills and non-technical skills, and 20% technical skills.
