I write novels for a living.

At last count, I have 71 of the little buggers on the market. I write a book about every two months and have been doing so for thirteen years.

So, when I read about someone who has been working on a novel for five years or more, I wonder why.

Now, this isn’t a critique. It’s just an honest question about what’s holding you back.

The truth … TIME is holding you back. The time it takes to write a novel. Books aren’t simple, and they aren’t quick to write. Anyone who’s tried it knows what I’m saying.

So, how do you find time to write … and make the time you do have to write more productive?

Here’s how I do it.

The key is being able to start and stop at will, to pick up where I last left off without skipping a beat. This not only makes it easier to step into the writing mode but also makes my writing time more efficient.

The way I do this is by having the book already firmly in my mind before I begin writing.

I know this is pretty basic. But you’d be surprised how many people simply sit down at the computer and start writing without having any idea where they’re going.
