AFTER A VERY SUCCESSFUL YEAR with The Progressive Teen’s launch of an Editorial Board, we have decided to embark on some new changes in order to further enhance the status and quality of our publication. This year we will be altering the sections of TPT: instead of restraining ourselves to Analysis, Opinion and Features, we will be expanding into Analysis, Op-Ed, Current News and Features.

We want each section to provide new insight and we want our articles to cover a variety of topics. By expanding into four sections, we believe The Progressive Teen will be able to join the ranks of other publications. Our goal is to make sure that each section is able to offer a new article, and perspective, so that topics don’t overlap. It’s important that we pay attention towards all news and aren’t confining ourselves to writing pieces about just major events. These four sections will give our writers more freedom and will make The Progressive Teen an even more all-encompassing publication.

Analysis: In our Analysis section, our writers will strive to put forth pieces that are objective and will examine situations through analytical lenses. They will be able to cover topics that are policy-oriented, and that require research. These articles should remain unbiased, and should be written with attention to detail. It is acceptable to come from a Democratic standpoint when crafting these articles, but strong personal opinions are discouraged. This section will be managed by the Analysis Editor.

Op-Ed: This section is very similar to last year’s Opinion section. We encourage our contributors to write pieces that are personal commentaries on issues they find significant. These topics could range from humanitarian issues to political controversies. These are pieces that are meant to have bias, and personal influence should weigh in. The topics covered in this section should be different from the ones written in analysis; we don’t want to change one prompt and alter it according to section. This section will be managed by the Op-Ed Editor.

Current Events: This section will detail major news and events that are occurring in the United States and around the world. They are to act as summaries, and writers should aim to give an overview of the situation they are writing about. These pieces can be similar to the style of The New York Time’s morning and evening briefings. This section will be managed by the Current Events Editor.

Features: This section will be dedicated towards HSDA updates, and weekly series that the section editors will collaborate on. It can range from video interviews, to featuring liberal organizations on a weekly basis, which was done last year. This section will be managed by the Analysis, Op-Ed and Current Events editors. It will be a joint effort, and the section will be a collaboration of their efforts and management.

The link to the application for section editors is attached below. Please take a close look at what each position entails as responsibilities are tailored towards each section. Section editors should be prepared to pitch article topics, edit articles, help provide feedback to pieces and work with contributors as well as synthesize new ideas that will help The Progressive Teen flourish even more.

Applications are due by no later than October 18th, 2017. We encourage anyone who is interested in applying. I look forward to working with the entire TPT team, and I’m always open to hearing any new ideas and suggestions. I think with such a passionate team of writers and editors, we can push The Progressive Teen towards a path of success.
