This topic has been rolling around for the past 2 years, “Which is better AMD or Intel?".

3 years ago the whole pc market was based on intel and AMD was on the verge of bankruptcy. AMD totally changed the game with their Zen architecture which pulled AMD up from their ashes. Fast forward 3 years and here we are where intel is struggling to keep up with AMD. So naturally the question arises “Which is better AMD or Intel?”. This has been a hot topic for debate among PC enthusiasts for the past 2 years, so lets get into details.

There isn't quiet a straight answer for this question, On one side Intel offers the best clock frequencies and single core performances which is great for gaming on the other hand AMD offers higher core and thread counts which is great for multitasking and creative workloads.

But the answer isn't as simple as saying AMD is great for content creation and intel is great for gaming, the answer is little more complicated than that.

So currently in the desktop lineup Intel comes with its 10th gen processors which are based on 14nm process and on team red’s side they have their Ryzen 3000 series with their Zen 2 architecture based on 7nm process.

Currently the high-end desktop processor outside the professional space from intel and AMD are intel’s i910900k and AMD’s Ryzen 9 3900x and 3950x even though Intel has a slight edge over gaming and is often acknowledged as the fastest gaming processor with a max boost clock of 5.3GHz AMD still keeps up the competition as its 3900x and 3950 x provide 12 cores and 24 threads and 16 cores and 32 threads respectively compared to Intel’s mere 10 cores and 20 threads.

Single threaded performance of various intel and AMD chips

As we can see clearly in the above benchmark, Intel definitely leads in the single core performance department but still AMD chips are still not that far behind

Multithreaded performance

To no one’s surprise AMD takes the lead in multi threaded performance with the Ryzen 3950x having a score of 393.5 com compared to the 311.1 score by the 10900 k .

The benchmark results clearly indicate that intel is the best CPU for gaming and AMD is the best CPU for content creation, this may be true to an extant but not entirely .Even a i7 10700k will work fine if you are planning to build a gaming desktop, you don't technically require the best processor for games to run fine. If a person is building a pc for gaming and creative workloads AMD is a better options as it gives more performance for the price than intel, but if you are building a PC purely for gaming and you don't have any budget constraints then Intel may be the way to go.

There are other reasons than performance you might consider AMD or Intel over the other. Intel CPU’s have far better support for thunderbolt 3 if you are someone who cares about thunderbolt ports. AMD’s latest 500 series motherboards offer PCIe4 support which can offer greater graphics performance and better storage solutions.

Zephyrus G14

For laptops intel offers their latest 10th gen processors and AMD comes out with their Ryzen 4000 series, even in the case of laptops AMD offers much more core and thread counts compared to their Intel counterparts. Last years Ryzen 3000 series was just an option for budget laptops as they where not even close to their intel counterparts, but with the release of Ryzen 4000 series AMD has really bridged the gap and AMD laptops like the Zephyrus G14 with Ryzen 9 4800h clearly crushes the competition. AMD still has an edge as it is a much more efficient processor because of the 7nm process and intel being stuck on their aging 14nm process.

Benchmarks on laptop CPUs

Both AMD and intel are great processors and both the processors will give you great performance on your laptop. The comparison on laptops is not also as straight forward as in a desktop as it greatly varies from laptop to laptop. Presently intel leads the laptop market as there are not many Ryzen based laptops out their. We hope to see a lot more Ryzen based laptops in the future.

So which is the one for you AMD or Intel?

For light usage like web browsing and video streaming both AMD and intel will give you the best performance but in certain cases one is better than the other.

If you are looking to load your PC with creative workloads and multi threaded applications AMD is the better choice. This doesn't mean that intel is bad, its just that you pay more for the same performance .

In case of gaming, intel is still the best for gaming but AMD processors offer a much better bang for your buck.

If you are buying a laptop it boils down to the review of the laptop as performance of the same processor varies form laptop to laptop.
