If you’re not in the software development industry, you might not know about Agile. It’s a method of software development that uses self-organizing and cross-functional teams working together with end-users to create products.

Originally, it was a set of 12 principles and four values. The four values of Agile are:

  • Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
  • Working software over comprehensive documentation
  • Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
  • Responding to change over following a plan

Along the way, approaches to these values were codified into different processes, best practices, and frameworks. A lot of businesses using Agile believe that it’s through the use of these things that make a team Agile.

Rodrigue Carneiro, Sr. Product Owner of Peapod Labs, explains why this view is a mistake. Agile is a mindset, not a particular process. Without the mindset behind Agile in place, processes can become rigid and remove the flexibility inherent in Agile software development.

The Main Takeaway

In this short talk, Rodrigue discusses why you should consider adopting Agile processes and how to build an Agile mindset in your workplace so that your teams can achieve the speed and efficiency promised by the methods. Through his work with Ahold Delhaize, he explains a four-part process [9:36] of structuring your business for Agile, how to improve links between IT and business, how to improve communication workflows, and celebrating your successes.

By understanding the mindset of Agile programming, the tools of Agile make much more sense. You’ll know which tools are right for your business case rather than wholesale adopting an Agile methodology without knowing why it works.
