The prompt: Write about an everyday occurrence or exchange, but limit yourself to two paragraphs and appropriately use the word jilt in the content.

The lipstick is deep red. She works hard to apply it just so. She fears she’ll look like Bette Davis in “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane.” Or worse, a child playing dress up. She takes the emotional leap necessary to go out in public with lips so bright. You cannot help but notice her boldness. She won’t blend in. She never has.

She tucks the lipstick in her pocket. She would need to reapply it after dinner, or else she’d be left with an odd line of red around her otherwise colorless lips. Later, on the sidewalk outside the theater, she reaches in her pocket for her keys as realizes the lipstick isn’t there. The $20 tube of a red called “Jilted” is gone. Likely it’s under the table of the booth they were seated at; a booth as red as the lipstick that had just jilted her.
