Beetlejuice 2: The Horror of Unnecessary Sequels

We’ve been held hostage by remakes and sequels of classic movies for years now. The Lion King (2019), Jurassic World (2015), Night At The Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again (2022), Disenchanted (2022), the list goes on and on. This year many more are coming, including Beetlejuice 2.

Beetlejuice 2 is slated for release on September 6th, 2024. Directed and produced by Tim Burton, starring Jenna Ortega along with the original cast. It seems as though many people are looking forward to this movie, but my main question is why?

We’ve seen this happen countless times now, a movie gets a sequel, a metric tonne of people go to see it, it gets mixed reviews, but ultimately makes enough money for the company to say, “Oh! This was super successful! Let’s recycle old movie concepts over and over so we don’t have to do anything except throw money at the project!” This doesn’t happen with every sequel, not all of them are extremely terrible, but I truly believe in the long run, this business model won’t be great for cinema.

Let’s look at The Lion King (2019), infinitely worse in every way than the original Lion King, with worse music, less emotion, and underwhelming dialogue. Along with its ugly visuals, it had no reason to gross $1.663 billion worldwide, so…
