Can’t Find The Romance

Hidden under writing tips and erotic fantasies

It’s been a long time since I’ve written erotica, or even just basic fiction. Coming back to the fray, I hopped on Medium to get back to reading — and ignite that inner flame — but found the dry, stale rhetoric of writing tips and general discussion.

The romance itself was nowhere to be found.

You’d think the keyword “romance” would pop up with plenty of stories, yet it doesn’t. Even adding “fiction” in doesn’t cut it. What gives? Where are my fawning ladies and stoic men at? Not trying to play favorites, but if I can’t even find the heteronormative stuff, it’s doubtful there’s much representation from the rainbow.

And no, I didn’t try “erotica.” That’s not what I was looking for.

Romance Without Sex?

Look, I don’t need the sex parts. I can write that just fine, provided my engine is already running. And while I know my fellow writers bring great work to the erotic craft, I’m not looking to start salivating just yet. That’s why there’s multiple categories, isn’t it? To give people choices.

I wanted something light. Something that would spark the interest, but not full-on arousal. It doesn’t have to play innocent or hard to get, so long as the goal is emotional…
