“Don’t Be Ridiculous!” I Told The Insurers
So, they dropped their price by over £200
The cost of insurance is on the up, apparently. The quote to renew our holiday home insurance for the house we are trying to sell more than doubled this year. I got another quote from a different broker — a slightly better one — and then wrote to the current insurers telling them not to be ridiculous.
“Can you cancel my renewal please? This increase is ridiculous. We haven’t claimed, yet the cost of the policy has more than doubled! I will find insurance elsewhere unless you’d like to come back with a more sensible quote, better reflecting the rate we paid last year”.
And they did come back, with a quote for insurance £200 cheaper with a different insurer. It doesn’t include flood cover, but then neither did last year’s and the place has never flooded. We are hoping to achieve a sale in the next few months, so hopefully we’ll complete before the autumn when flood risk increases.
So the lesson learned, if your insurer is being ridiculous, is to tell them they’re being ridiculous, and ask them to do better. It might work out in your favour.
I am still comparing best quotes and waiting to see what happens with prospective buyers, but the shock of the renewal letter has softened, and I’m feeling less bruised.
