Hide, Seek, and a Wish
I played hide and seek with my younger children (5 and 8) the other day, and I realized that sometimes the best hiding place is the one in the middle of the living room.
We have a couch, and it’s always covered with dozens of pillows and plaids. It looks more like a dumpster ground from Pillowland than a couch. But it’s super comfy, and we love sitting there as a family. All together on Saturday evenings for the pizza and movie combo night. The last movie we watched was My Neighbor Totoro, and we loved it.
After losing a few rounds of hide and seek because I’m, like Totoro, much bigger than my kids and unable to hide in all the wardrobes and stuff, I came up with this genius idea.
“Honey! Quick! Can you help me hide on the couch?”
“But they’ll find you right away. It’s too obvious.”
“That’s why it will work.”
Twelve minutes later, I was still hiding under pillows and blankets, and my kids were still searching for me while my wife was laughing and drinking her vodka-flavored tea. My kids were giggling with surprise. Everybody was happy.
I waited a few more minutes and revealed myself. My kids declared I was the new KOSH (King Of Seek and Hide) and should be granted one wish as a reward.
