Poop Production Machines

Don’t let those innocent eyes fool you. You’d never imagine such a small creature could produce so much poo, until you’ve kept guinea pigs, and then the full horror of these little poop production machines hits you!

We’ve kept guinea pigs for 20 years. They are gorgeous, but they produce so much poo! We’ve dealt with impacted rectums, holidays where they have to manage for themselves for a few days, and there’s no getting away from the clean-up necessary when we get home.

But despite the endless droppings and occasional backside dramas, we wouldn’t trade them for anything. There’s something ridiculously charming about the way they squeak for food, run around their cage, climb up the railings, and squeak with excitement. They’re not too keen on being handled and try to escape when they’re at risk of being picked up, but we adore them anyway, and interact on their terms.

They redecorate our carpet with hay, throw their poos out of the cage across the carpet, and leave a trail of pellets behind wherever they go — but they’ve stolen our hearts and minds.

We have a deep and committed relationship… not just with our guinea pig boys, but also, with a dustpan and brush!
