“Tricker treat!” the child with a missing tooth thrust their plastic jack o’lantern at her eagerly that warm fall Memphis night.

Rapidly falling from grace, exhausted from a visit to Graceland, Kaelyn focused on the child. Why the upscale hotel allowed children to trick or treat she was not sure.

The only wrapped thing she had on her was a condom which currently neither her or the child needed.

Alasdair was almost in Iceland, Kaelyn was still in Tennessee. They were over for now and maybe for good.

She adjusted her Halloween mask gently — slightly damp from her hidden tears.
