Bjelovar/Author’s source

I was invited to run an ultra-marathon from Bjelovar to Kusonje, I obviously said yes. The history of this town was very interesting, and it definitely has a story to tell.

Bjelovar lies between Zagreb and Slavonia. It has one of the most famous war memorials of the former Yugoslavia. They are known for their smoked cheese, and domestic breed of horses, Lipicaner.

Center of the town

The center of the town is small but full of history. A big pavilion was constructed during World War II. This is the largest pavilion in the world. The biggest celebrations are held here.

Next to the pavilion, a Baroque cathedral is located. You can see it in the first photo. It was built between 1765 and 1772. Its name heritages from the patron saint of Habsburg empress Maria Theresa.

They have a statue that is 250 years old, but no one knows who the artist was. It is believed that it was built in 1770, it is almost as old as Bjelovar.
