Why I’m Returning to Old-School Blogging

And yes, Google made me do it.

In 2009, I installed this wonderful blogging system called WordPress to a website domain I’d owned since 2003. I’d been running my grant writing business and teaching some courses online but that didn’t satisfy my hunger for creative writing.

I wanted to write creative non-fiction in the form of essays about life, wisdom, and the self-awareness journey.

My best friend Roslyn joined me, and we had a magnificent time posting “stories” almost daily. We collaborated with other bloggers and joined social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace.

We monetized our blog with Google AdSense, a few affiliate links to products we liked, and a three-eBook set. On average, we earned about $700 to 900 a month.

It was fun. We had a blast for two years.

However, soon Roslyn’s responsibilities increased at work, and she didn’t have time to blog as much, and some months not at all. I’d ended my grant writing business and began ghostwriting for three clients which eventually became six clients by early 2012. I didn’t have the bandwidth to operate a blog.

Furthermore, we were sick of spam. I’d write a post one day and the next day there were links to Viagra and Cialis all over…
