Today we’re excited to announce Public.com’s partnership with Elaine Welteroth, journalist, producer, and New York Times best-selling author, to help lower the barriers to entry for young BIPOC people, especially Black women, interested in different avenues for wealth creation, with a focus on investing in the public markets.

As a judge on Bravo’s “Project Runway” this season and the former editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, Welteroth will bring a wealth of knowledge to Public’s community of 1 million+ investors (40% women, 45% BIPOC) from her experiences spanning the worlds of media, fashion, beauty, and wellness. At Teen Vogue, where she was the youngest-ever Conde Nast editor, she prioritized diversity and social justice coverage, and drove the magazine’s expansion into feminism, culture, and politics. Welteroth also helped launch the 15 Percent Pledge, a non-profit advocacy organization that recruits major retailers including Sephora and Macy’s to commit at least 15% of their purchasing power to Black-owned businesses.

Now, Welteroth will partner with Public to educate and inspire a new generation of investors, increasing financial opportunities for the BIPOC community and putting her money where her values are, investing in minority- and women-owned public companies, especially in the fashion and wellness space. As part of the partnership:

  • Welteroth will join the Public community, sharing her unique perspectives and participating in the conversation alongside the community. You can follow her there @ElaineWelteroth.
  • For the duration of the partnership, Public will be giving away free stock for Welteroth’s fans who start a portfolio on Public to help them start their investing journeys. New members can sign up here or use the code ELAINE to receive $50 of free stock.
  • Welteroth will appear on a special edition of Public Live on #GivingTuesday to share her entrepreneurial journey with the Public community, including how she pushed for more inclusive and political coverage at Teen Vogue, the importance of supporting minority- and women-owned businesses, and how to get young BIPOC people started investing in the public markets. The #GivingTuesday Public Live will take place November 30 at 12pm EST.
  • Welteroth will also join forces with Sophia Amoruso, Entrepreneur, New York Times Bestselling Author, and Founder of Business Class, for a special Instagram Live event (date to be announced) to discuss building wealth for a new generation of young BIPOC investors.

“I’m excited to partner with Public.com to help make investing more approachable for the next generation of investors,” said Welteroth. “I’ve always pushed for more inclusivity and diversity throughout my career, whether during my time at the helm of Teen Vogue, through my work in television on Project Runway and The Talk, or in my philanthropic work. Now, I couldn’t be more excited about helping open up doors to young BIPOC people in the investing world to help them take ownership of their future.”

We’re so excited to partner with Elaine and make her an equity holder of Public. Together, we look forward to breaking down barriers and getting more young BIPOC people invested in the public markets as they build wealth for the long term. Find her at public.com/ElaineWelteroth, and tune in to her first Public Live right in the app on November 30.
