My father used to say “anything that ain’t growing is dead”. This sentiment has always stuck with me, particularly as I embarked on my artistic journey. As I’ve gotten older, I realized this saying had many meanings, most importantly, it was a recipe for creative freedom. As long as you’re growing you can try new things, you can take new approaches and you can be free to experiment with new styles of growth within your artistry. Style and evolution within your art is a pulse check to make sure your hearts passion is alive and well. Let me be the first to tell you that Dj Famous ain’t only growing but he’s LIVING like none other.

At the end of last seasons Vibes series. Dj Famous (Moe Jamerson) mentioned Vibes taking a new direction. Although at the time he mentioned he wasn’t sure exactly how that would feel and sound, but he was comfortable with allowing himself time to grow and explore where he wanted to go next as an artist. Vibes S02E01 is a brilliant testament to that growth. Traditionally Vibes always served as a reflection of what Moe the Dj could do, with season 2 we are seeing what Moe the producer/A&R/FUTURE MUSIC MOGUL can do. Vibes S02E01 plays out more like a well crafted debut album of an artist. From the onset of the mix you hearing Famous directly speaking to us about what Vibes means to him. We aren’t just getting mixtapes, now we’re enjoying flawlessly produced original remixes. There’s also been a change in format; the move to Apple Music means reaching people on a larger more connected scale. We’re getting to see what Famous is REALLY capable of, and it’s brilliant.

Whether it’s reworking Janet’s Someone to Call My Lover into a chill trap track, or educating us in how the divine Ms. Teena Marie blessed The Fuguees, Nas, and Jay-Z with a timeless sample via Ooh La La, or the standout I Need A Girl set over Clipse’s Grindin’; Vibes S02E01 is a brilliant example of artistry and growth. Long live Dj Famous!
