Local LA Intramurals: Sports Even You Can Do!
Physical activities are essential to a person’s physical health and well-being. Growing up, we’ve been encouraged in our PE classes to go outside and be active– hence the ball games, exercises, and annual Jog-A-Thons. These physical activities allow people to stay fit, build confidence, socialize with others, and develop other skills such as teamwork, leadership, and communication.
However, if you’re anything like me and cannot do anything remotely athletic without passing out, may I present you with some sports activities in the LA area that get you moving while still feeling like you are having fun!
If you enjoyed playing dodgeball with your high school PE friends, this is the league for you! Located in the West Hollywood area, WeHo Dodgeball is a co-ed league that allows players from all skill levels to compete in teams and hit each other with “no sting” balls, creating a fun yet competitive environment. A party at GYM Sportsbar follows up each match. Registration for the Spring season is currently open for $80.
LAOUT (Los Angeles Organization of Ultimate Teams)
For frisbee lovers, LAOUT is an LA-based league of Ultimate Frisbee players looking to provide playing opportunities for the sport. This activity combines football, soccer, and basketball into a game where teams pass the Frisbee in the end zone. Players from any skill level are welcome to join and participate in tournaments, seasonal leagues, and pickup games. Prices for league registration start at around $90.
The Santa Monica Lawn Bowls Club is an outdoor bowling club that welcomes members from ages nine to 90. Located in Douglas Park, Santa Monica, this club provides the perfect pastime to socialize, learn a new sport, and experience some friendly competition. The club consists of lessons, tournaments, and other social events for members to enjoy. New club members receive a $20 beginner’s special.
Located in Artesia, the East West Ice Palace is a skating rink that lets you take a break from the sun and heat and enjoy this beloved activity. The Ice Palaces offers a range of activities for visitors, from weekly public skating to figure skating and ice hockey. Fun fact: general admission only $15. Just be careful not to fall!
This pop-up, “boutique-style” roller skating rink in Long Beach is open to anyone at any skating level looking to hang out with friends and family. For just $10, Pigeon’s Roller Rink is the perfect place to have fun with themed events, public skating sessions, skate lessons, private rentals, and birthday party events.
Whether you’re trying to work on your upper body strength, get over a breakup, or maybe just want to try something new, you should try axe throwing! In Long Beach, Bad Axe Throwing strives to share this pastime with the public. Bad Axe Throwing offers a unique experience for visitors ages 21 and up, welcoming walk-ins anytime, birthday parties, and work events. Walk-in prices range from $25-$27 for a 45-minute session, while private axe-throwing sessions last 1.5 hours. Prices vary depending on the number of guests.
Hopefully, looking at some of these unique activities will encourage and inspire you to get up, get moving, and seek out a fun, inclusive, physical experience and opportunity.
