In September 2017, Microsoft unveiled a new programming language aimed at training developers on how to program quantum computers before they are even released to mainstream audiences.

It’s mysterious, so much so that it does not even have a name yet.

That’s right, no name.

All Microsoft said was that it would be integrated into Visual Studio, naturally, and it would have elements borrowed from C# and F# among others. Both of these languages are a part of Microsoft’s .NET suite.

Following Microsoft’s famously bad and late foray into mobile under Steve Balmer, the move to be proactive instead of reactive with quantum computing is very smart.

Quantum computing is inevitable. It will happen, it will become commercialized and mainstream, and it will change the way we interact with computers. By getting a jumpstart into the space and integrating their new quantum technologies with their existing platforms, Microsoft is setting itself up for booming success in quantum.

UPDATE (December, 2017): The language will be called Q# !
