The elections for the Students’ Parliament were held on the 24th of March, 2018 to elect the new parliamentarians. This was followed by the oath-taking ceremony of the parliamentarians and the election of the VP, Gymkhana for the session 2017–18. Sudhir Narwal, a 4th year student was chosen for the prestigious post. The Media Club had a brief discussion with him and the EX-VP, Mr. Sai Teja Reddy. Here we present an excerpt of the same.

Parting words from Mr. Sai Teja Reddy, Ex. VP, Students’ Parliament, IIT(BHU) Varanasi

Mr. Sai Teja Reddy, VP, Students’ Parliament, IIT (BHU) Varanasi, 2017–18

Q — What do you expect in the upcoming session to be executed?

I think the parliament needs to turn to legislation part rather than execution part. Of course, execution is important and will be taken care of by it but this should not affect the Legislative Part of the parliament as this is of utmost importance and needs to be done for building a framework for the whole year as well as for the upcoming parliament bodies too. Moreover, it will also recognize Parliament work more officially. So, shift from little Legislation to more legislation and more Execution to a little lesser execution is important and is expected.

Q — Something as your parting words as the VP of the Students’ Parliament for the entire college junta…

NIRF ranking of our college is pretty low this time again… it’s 19. Some of the major reasons behind this are the extremely low Student-Teacher Ratio and also the lagging research sector in our college. Though in the placement section, we stood at 9th position out of all institutes in graduate outcome. So, I think students have to take this on a very serious note and turn more and more in the academic and research field and that’s it!

From the desk of the New VP, Mr. Sudhir Narwal

Mr. Surdhir Narwal, VP, Students’ Parliament, IIT (BHU) Varanasi, 2017–18.

Ø Could you tell us something about your prior experiences in the Parliament and in the college?

Ans — When I came into college, I was always very enthusiastic to explore things. In my first year, I was involved in different activities of various clubs. I was also a part of the 1st Students’ Parliament of the college for the session 2015–16 and from there on, I came to know of the importance of this student body of the IIT (BHU) gymkhana. Apart from this, I have also been a core team member of Kashiyatra, the annual socio-cultural fest of our college. From a volunteer to senior adviser, I’ve learnt a lot from this team.

Ø Could you tell us about your vision as the Convener of Students’ Parliament?

Ans — As I have already stated that I was enthusiastic to explore things and I have also been a part of various college activities but finally what I realize is that if you want to do something for the college, then the Students’ Parliament is the best platform for that. Now, as the VP of the Students’ Gymkhana and Convener of the Students’ Parliament, my vision is to raise the standards of the college and provide better facilities to the students so that they can excel in any field they want. I want to act as a point of contact between the students and the administration so that I can form policies according to the requirements of the students and put them in front of the administration. I also have a focus on improving Research and Development, as I feel that this is a major sector where we lack a good base in comparison to other institutes. So, my generalized vision is to improve the facilities for the students and work upon the areas in which we are lacking, so that the overall ranking of the college improves in the upcoming years.

Ø The Ex-Parliament body has worked day and night to bring some of the worthiest changes in the college. What’s your strategy to work along with your team for keeping this legacy to be continued?

Ans — I agree that the Ex-Parliament body has worked day and night and they have set very high standards for me. To continue this legacy, it’s important that each and every member of the Students’ Parliament actively participates in the discussions. My strategy for the same would be to keep them motivated and let their interest grow in the tasks assigned to them. If the complete team of 53 members starts giving their valuable inputs, then it would very easy to keep this legacy continuing because our strength lies in our unity.

Ø What more and different can we expect from this year’s parliament for the upcoming session as compared to previous years?

Ans — Firstly, I would like to congratulate last year’s parliament for all the work done by them and there was a lot to learn from them. Apart from taking up new projects, this year’s parliament would also focus on studying the projects of the last year’s parliament and finishing them as soon as possible. Further, some new things that we would like to do this year are that we want to communicate more with the students of the institute. For this, we are planning to make the minutes of the meeting very precise and send them on a regular basis to the students. Also regular updates of the discussions in the parliament would be done on social media to keep the students informed. Further, we would like to increase the efficiency of the parliament through active involvement of maximum number of members. Let us hope for the best !!

We congratulate the newly elected members of the Parliament and wish them the best of luck for the session ahead.
