A Ballad

How do I purify my life?
How do I cleanse my soul?
When who I am is stained and dirty,
How can I be whole?

My righteousness is filthy rags:
My heart cries out, “unclean!”
Your Word I’ve hidden in my heart
To keep me from my sin.

My evil, like the wind, carries
My heart and soul away,
But I will seek You with all zeal:
I’m on my knees to pray.

How do I purify my life?
How do I cleanse my soul?
When who I am is stained and dirty,
How can I be whole?

I will not forget Your Word,
For I delight in You,
And with my lips I will declare
Everything You do.

I meditate on all Your creeds
And contemplate Your ways
For they are treasure beyond price.
I lift my hands in praise.

For You have purified my life,
And You have cleansed my soul.
I thought I was disgusting…
