A Kyrielle

If You had not been on my side,
They would have swallowed me alive.
My self I would have e’er denied.
Would I have known I was deprived?

Their wrath as waves swept over me —
If You had not been on my side
They’d smother me and call me “free” —
Submerged beneath the cruel flood tide.

O, blessed be the God most high,
For You have not let me be prey.
If You had not been on my side,
I never would have found my way.

My soul escaped the fowler’s snare:
The door You broke is open wide.
I would have been lost in despair
If You had not been on my side.

Esther learned to read when she was four years old, and began writing shortly thereafter. She is a queer Christian poet, crafting with words to create art and music.
