Why are you downcast, my soul?
God, You are my strength and song;
Why have You forsaken me?
Ransom me and set me free.

Why are you downcast, my soul?
Vindicate me, Oh my God
When they outlaw who I am,
Preach and teach that I am damned.

Why are you downcast, my soul?
Those who claim to follow You
Twist and turn Your words around
’Til hate is love and up is down.

Why are you downcast, my soul?
Lead me in Your light and truth,
Bring me to Your holy hill,
All Your promises fulfill.

Why are you downcast, my soul?
Hope in God and plead my case,
Ally, Advocate, and Friend:
Stand with me until the end.

Esther learned to read when she was four years old, and began writing shortly thereafter. She is a queer Christian poet, crafting with words to create art and music.
