“In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends.” — Dr Martin Luther King Jr

Do you speak righteousness, oh silent ones?
When enemies assail on every hand
And you stand by, do nothing, hold your tongues,
You weigh out violence upon the land.
Your silence is a poison to my ear
Endorsing suffering and cruelty.
If you are with me you must make it clear:
Speak up and dare to stand alongside me.
If you would be my ally and my friend,
You must expose yourself to what I bear.
If you are silent, your love is pretend;
If you do not speak up, then you don’t care.
You hedge your bets on every side, you charm,
But your “impartiality” is harm.

Esther learned to read when she was four years old, and began writing shortly thereafter. She is a queer Christian poet, crafting with words to create art and music.
