Leafless Angel

A poem for the departed.

The bark warms to my palm.
I press deeper, close my eyes,
Remember when we dreamed.

Feel my skin nestle into the grooves,
Dry cracks shifting to meet mine,
Filling my body with pieces of you
The world turned to ash.

Memories of dappled sun on our backs
As we tucked ourselves between the roots,
Wondered at nature’s gleam.

This is the place for you —
Where bliss burst our hearts
And wrapped them in quiet moments
Of breathing.

Ashes to earth, you fly
With whispering bones,
Quicksilver in the seams.

Dew draws you into the light
But my heart will beat for our seasons,
Sigh as I dance in the arms
Of a leafless angel.
