I am thrilled that Big Ten Football is back. Watching my Ohio State Buckeyes brought so much joy to me. As you know we Buckeyes are crazy about our football team.

We have numerous Facebook and Instagram pages online to talk about Buckeye sports, support our team, and trash the Michigan Wolverines. The game against Nebraska on October 24, 2020, was no different as there were thousands upon thousands of people bantering online about the game.

What was different this time, however, were the voluminous angry messages posted by white men and women about the word EQUALITY placed on the back of Ohio State football helmets.

Comments like…

“Why can’t they keep f —ckin politics out of this?”

“I’m done with the Buckeyes. Good riddance”

“All Lives Matter. Blue Lives Matter.”

I’ll leave out the dozens of more profane examples.

Since when is the concept of equality political? When did the word equality become offensive? When did a basic statement about human dignity become so triggering?

The helmets didn’t say Fuck the Police. Or I hate the military. They didn’t say or imply burn our…
