Jose Manuel Barroso meets with Benjamin Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel — European External Action Service, licensed CC BY NC ND 2.0

I just read an article in the Jerusalem Post about Prime Minister Netanyahu’s apparent and growing political isolation and I find myself wondering what he would be able to achieve if we wasn’t forced to govern through such a tenuous coalition?

Israel needs to reform its electoral system. The current system gives small parties disproportionate influence over government policy under the threat of collapsing the government if they don’t get their way. Netanyahu’s current coalition mustered 61 seats in the Knesset, just 1 seat over the threshold. If any of the parties split with the coalition, we head back to the polls.

I wonder what the Prime Minister would do if he could rule without so many smaller parties dictating his policy decisions, perhaps even contrary to Israel’s interests?
