LOS ANGELES — It is a fool’s errand to try and identify a more valuable running back In the NFL than Todd Gurley. The Rams workhorse has consistently put up ridiculous numbers all season. He made headlines this week for an interesting stat that shows him scoring more points than the entire offense of the Buffalo Bills so far this season. But what may be a far more impressive stat is that Gurley’s 88 points this year has surpassed the 74 times I have purchased Subway sandwiches during the same period.

Sure, there are some slight differences between the time and effort that go into being an NFL running back verses that of going to Subway. But this is a shocking metric when one considers that I am eating Subway three to four times a week, more than any person should be. Constantly eating these sandwiches is a painful, stomach wrenching commitment. The human body can only handle so much bread and chipotle mayonnaise, but it comes down to a high level of perseverance. That’s why seeing a professional football player outpace such an aggressive level of Subway consumption is pretty remarkable, and a testament to Gurley’s unmatched skill as a player.

The thing to look for during the coming months will be if current numbers remain consistent. Gurley is projected to have a record setting season, and will likely continue to produce. However I also plan to keep up the pace, as I plan to avoid grocery shopping and instead to opt for Italian subs most days for lunch. Combined with the fact that Subway recently unveiled signature wraps, I plan to put in the work to log 10+ meals there a week. The future is unclear, but this is a long race that only time will be the judge of.
