Steel Yourself, Roe v. Wade Will Most Likely Be Overturned Today

Today, the US Supreme Court will most likely drop a bomb in a ruling that will effectively overturn Roe v. Wade and then scurry off for a long holiday, hoping Americans aren’t paying attention due to the 4th of July weekend coming up.

Roe v. Wade established a constitutional protection for abortion for all Americans in the landmark 1973 case.

Last month, a leaked majority opinion draft indicated the court finally has enough conservatives to do what they’ve wanted to do for 50 years. Take away from women an established legal precedent — the right over her body.

If Roe is struck down today, it will significantly impact states across the country that have already signaled their intention to restrict or ban abortion. It will end federal protections for abortion and return the decision to individual states.

Across large parts of the country, women will experience devastating health, emotional and financial consequences.

The Guttmacher Institute predicts that 26 states are certain or likely to quickly ban abortion, widening the divide between “red” and “blue” states. Some 13 states have laws on the books called “trigger laws” restricting or banning abortion that would take effect immediately. Some are older measures that have simply been…
