Women, You Are Not Important
The Constitution isn’t a failure. Alito’s lack of imagination is.
July was a long month. Even though many of us knew the extreme right majority on the Supreme Court was giddy to overturn Roe — and why they took on the case Dobbs vs. Jackson Women’s Health Organization — living with the reality of it is a much different feeling.
All women understand what it means to have a diminished sense of personal dignity and worth because of one’s sex. If you’re female and live in this world, you’ve experienced discrimination at one time or another.
The majority opinion of the highest court declares that women don’t matter.
Women are not only not visible according to the justices (five men and Aunt Lydia) we are immaterial, not considered at all. Even now. According to the Constitution, we don’t exist. These justices don’t recognize us in the laws they make us live by.
According to Justice Samuel Alito, we are legally irrelevant. Not significant enough to warrant the protection of our rights and dignity that the Constitution affords white, cis men.
