Consumed!

July 1st is becoming popular as Doctor’s Day in India…

And I have just one question about this arguably hypocritical and pseudo celebration —

No offense meant, but is it really justified, including the medical profession under the COPRA aka the Consumer Protection Act? I have serious reservations against it (along with a lot of my colleagues, I’m sure). Do let me tell you why. The general public, i.e. the non-medical community, I’m so very sorry to realize, will never be able to understand the ‘medical’ way of life. They will obviously hear about it (and some will even think it appropriately suitable for us ‘supermen and superwomen’) but they will never fully appreciate it — not the sheer magnitude of the work load nor the innumerable sacrifices it involves: of time, personal space, food, sleep, relationships…life… — and that in spite of all of the above, when we do our job, that we try and do our friggin’ best! Now, doesn’t that warrant a certain compensation by way of satisfaction with the service rendered? The reason why this ‘rewarding’ profession was chosen in the first place? I will not use the overused and now stale ‘noble’ word but you do see the point, don’t you? As for the money argument (“oh they can afford it”) — there is no money until the early 30’s (or late 20’s for the brainiacs), so that argument is a laugh riot indeed!

What I mean to say is, to live with the constant agony of a potential threat to this precious and painfully built career, like a lethal blow that is hanging in the air to strike at the ready (very like the guillotine of yore)… is intolerable! And I can see it taking its toll!
