Rochester, NY — In late July, four scholars from Sci-Tech High School (STHS) in Austin, TX recently traveled to Rochester, New York to attend PeerForward’s national student leadership training.

Seniors Alejandro B., Haannia S., Allegría D. and Daisy P. were selected to participate in this intensive training in late July along with STHS’ lead counselor Mr. Rose.

PeerForward is a national nonprofit organization focused on increasing college graduation rates for first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students. Through their high school and college programs, PeerForward trains student leaders to provide mentoring, coaching and support to their peers throughout the college application and transition process.

While in New York, the STHS group received comprehensive training and tools for guiding fellow students on the path to college. This included leadership development, training on the FAFSA financial aid application, and hands-on college admission coaching. Mr. Rose also received specialized training on campaign planning, data collection, and team building strategies to further support the student leaders at STHS.

In addition to the focused training, the STHS scholars had the opportunity to connect with peers from across the country also interested in making a difference in their school communities. They engaged in writing and leadership workshops to build skills for motivating and advising their fellow classmates.

The experience had a powerful impact on our ravens. Senior Haannia S. shared the following about the trip.

“This trip taught me the ability to be proud of my accomplishments and how to overcome many personal challenges. It was life changing for me. I highly recommend this to anyone at Wayside”

Fellow senior Daisy P. added:

“I learned from this trip that there are many people out there and that I can make friends with people outside my comfort zone.”

With the new tools and perspectives gained at the PeerForward training, these STHS students are prepared to take on leadership roles supporting their peers at STHS this year. They aim to help fellow students at STHS pursue higher education opportunities and succeed.
