Haannia Salazar is one of Sci-Tech Prep’s top scholars, and as the new school year begins, she has mixed emotions about the new changes at STHS.

Haannia S., Senior, class of 2023–2024

Let’s delve deeper into her thoughts, but first, a brief introduction.

Haannia’s academic rigor is evident from her enrollment in three IB classes: Lang/Lit, Spanish, and History.

In addition, she studies Government, Environmental Systems, Graphic Design, and participates in Athletics.

As her graduation approaches, she’s eyeing a future in Business Administration with a minor in Entrepreneurship. Yet, her aspirations don’t end there; she’s also considering an ultrasound program further down the line.

With dreams and ambitions in tow, Haannia aims to apply to several colleges, including Texas State, Trinity College, St. Edwards, and the University of Arlington.

I caught up with Haannia during her free period to chat about her senior year. When asked about challenges, she expressed, “One major hurdle I’ve encountered this year is navigating the college application process, particularly understanding how to apply for financial aid.”

She added that the weight of being a first-generation college student is becoming more palpable, adding to her stress.

Discussing the new school policies, Haannia voiced concerns. “While I appreciate the ACT prep support, I wish I’d been informed better. Being part of the top 12 means mandatory ACT prep, which unfortunately conflicts with my club commitments,” she explained.

On the topic of Sci-Tech’s updated dress code, Haannia commented, “I’m not fond of the restriction against wearing multi-colored hoodies.”

Despite these critiques, Haannia feels overall positive about this year’s vibes and hopes to take leading roles in school events while continuing to battle the college application process.
