This week, STHS introduced new club and tutorial sessions during its redesigned Ravens’ Nest period, formerly known as “advisory.”

The school now dedicates the Ravens’ Nest period on Wednesdays and Thursdays for students to engage in various activities of their choice.

This marks a significant departure from last year when schoalars met with their advisors daily for advisory.

Now, students will see their advisors a few times a week and participate in clubs and tutorials on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Like a typical Ravens’ Nest period, these sessions take place from 3:25–4:15 pm.

Students now sign up for their preferred clubs and tutorials using an online application called “FlexTime.”

Flextime or “securlyflex” allows students to pick and choose activities for Wednesdays and Thursdays.

How scholars choose clubs

Students who are up-to-date with their classes and Apex can choose the clubs and tutorial sessions they wish to attend.

Those who are falling behind may be required to attend mandated tutorials with specific teachers.

This week saw the debut of many new clubs, along with the return of some familiar ones.

Returning clubs like Chess Club, Pride Club and Student Council were a popular choice for many. New clubs like Drama Club and Gardening Club added something new to the STHS campus.

This change aims to provide more opportunities for students to explore their interests and receive additional academic support.

STHS’ Feedback on the New Clubs

One student, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed enthusiasm about the new opportunities, saying, “I really liked the opportunity to try new things. I think I will try a new club each week until I find one that fits me.”

Ms. Masini, STHS’ Spanish teacher, praised this new change, saying:

“I think this change is a great opportunity for students to try out new things and extend their learning experiences. If executed effectively, this new structure could produce some great things.”

Senior Kenny V. expressed a similar sentiment to Raven Post reporters, stating, “I think this change is nice and keeps the day interesting.”

Despite most STHS scholars reporting positive reactions to the new advisory change, some seniors expressed mixed feelings about the reported mandatory ACT prep sessions for some seniors.

Senior Avdel commented, “I like this new change with the Ravens’ Nest, but I thought I was going to be able to sign up for clubs, not just be in ACT prep doing more work.”

Senior Haannia S. shared a similar view, lamenting the restrictions on exploring new things due to ACT prep in the first weeks of school:

“I really like the new change, but I wish I could do more than just ACT prep for our club time for these the first weeks of school. It really restricts our options and potential to explore new things in this critical time of our lives.”

Despite these concerns, most teachers and students reported positive feelings about the new changes to Ravens’ Nest. The general sentiment seems hopeful that these adjustments will benefit the Wayside Community at STHS.
