I’ve been trying to think about how to write this…

Honestly? The UK is in a downward spiral of a kind I don’t think many of us have ever seen.
Reports of staples costing double digits in all six major supermarkets, several PMs being nominated without a General Election. Talk of rolling blackouts and seven day (!!!) power cuts at worst.
We’re going back to issues we faced when I was a baby, or before.

This week I turned 44. We went out for an afternoon tea with family, and I was struck by the fact that the place we went, which was packed, despite lockdown last time, was quieter, emptier, more sombre than before. And every time I’ve gone to write this article, I’ve cried.

Uncertainty is everywhere, and right now, the real issue isn’t the blackouts, it’s those already in food poverty. Or fuel poverty. Or both. So many families can’t focus on the blackouts further out in the future, because right now? They’re struggling with the things they’re needing to deal with. Their life just isn’t about what will happen when the bills go up, they’re struggling now.

And I think that’s where we all come in.
