My friend and colleague, Scott C. Elwell, passed away this past Saturday after a sudden illness. Scott was probably the smartest person I have ever known, and spoke a total of five different languages. He understood the INA backward and forward, and was glad to consult with other lawyers on the immigration consequences of criminal and other actions. His clients loved him, and his office was adorned with artifacts they brought for him from (literally) all corners of the world.

Scott was also a very warm, kind man with a big heart and a great sense of humor. He lightened our offices with many years of goofy banter. The things we joked about were usually so eccentric that I couldn’t really explain them to others, but we had a great time. He loved music, and could always tell me on which album a random Van Halen or Rolling Stones song was to be found. But the most important thing in Scott’s life were his two little girls. He spoke of them often, ever the proud father.

I don’t have too many friends, and I was proud to count him among them. Scott, we’ll miss you.
