It’s a new year, which means we’re all bombarded with motivational messages about setting lofty goals — lose that weight, start that business, get that promotion yada yada yada.

And for artists, it’s the exact same thing. “This year I’m going to master a new technique / write that novel / start making money from my craft / get more commissions, etc.”

Look, I’ll never shame any artist for being ambitious (in fact, I’ve previously written about why artists need to dream bigger), but we all know that most of us creators give up on our New Year’s resolutions pretty quickly for all kinds of reasons, usually when we realize just how daunting our goals are.

For most of us, we fail before we even take that first step towards achieving something big — the size of the mountain we’re trying to scale is enough to deter a lot of people struggling to make it as an artist.

And that’s why I’m proposing a new kind of New Year’s resolution for artists — skip the lofty goals and instead focus on relearning your craft.
